This is the second post for our trip to the Huachuca Mountains, this time covering our time in Huachuca Canyon. We had breakfast in the hotel, and headed out early to Huachuca Canyon. We already had our pass for entry into Fort Huachuca, so we didn’t have to wait in line again to get one.
We stopped along Huachuca Canyon Road where there was some water flowing out of a pipe into the creek. It was attracting wildlife. There were about 8 hummingbirds buzzing around, drinking and bathing in the water. Other birds there included: Warbling Vireo, Black-throated Gray Warbler (I got a bad picture which I didn’t post), and Bridled Titmouse.
Next we drove up to the Upper Picnic Area, and hiked a couple of miles. We saw the Elegant Trogon on the trail. I was hoping to see a Sulphur-bellied Flycatcher, which I’ve seen in past years on this trail, but no luck.
On the way out we stopped at the Lower Picnic Area, which has been a good spot in the past. This day it was quiet; maybe due to the time of day, since it was about 1:30 PM. From there we headed home, and made it back before dinner time.
As usual, we had a good time in the Huachuca Mountains. It’s a beautiful area, and the weather was great.

Beautiful, Joe. What an amazing collection! Lovely. Isn’t the Trogon a rare find?
Thanks, Tiki! It is hard to find the Elegant Trogon. It is only found in North America in southern Arizona. However, I’ve found that Huachuca Canyon is reliable place to find them in the summer (April – August). We’ve seen them almost every time we’ve been there.
