Fr. Charlie and I went to Woods Canyon Lake on the Mogollon Rim. We wanted to try our luck photographing the Ospreys and Bald Eagles. We left on Monday, Aug 26th, at around 7:00 AM, and got there around 9:00 AM.
We hoped to photograph Osprey catching fish in the lake, and, if we were lucky, we might also get some Bald Eagle photos. We rented a little electric motor boat so we could get closer to the action. Unfortunately, we didn’t get any Osprey diving close to the boat. There were quite a few Osprey, and we observed them fishing, but I was only able to photograph two sequences of the Osprey catching fish, and in both cases they weren’t very close to the boat, and the Osprey was facing away from me. We spent about 3 hours in the boat. It was nice to get out of the boat and stretch our legs!
I think it’s better to go on a Friday, when they stock the lake for the weekend fishermen. There is more Osprey fishing activity then, and a better chance of getting some close up shots.
When we got to the shore we heard a Bald Eagle calling, and followed the sound. The eagle dove for a fish, but we weren’t able to photograph it. I did get some in-flight shots, and some eagle roosting shots. We waited quite a while, hoping the eagle would take off for some fish, but he was content roosting, and outlasted us.
By then, it was getting late and we didn’t have time to hike along the lake, so we headed home. We got home around 4:30 PM.
We had a great time at the lake!
