Mary Ann and I went to the Riparian Preserve at Water Ranch (RPWR) in Gilbert on Monday morning, Feb 25. It was a nice morning, starting cold (low 40s) and warming up quickly.
We saw the the typical birds at RPWR. We came across an Anna’s Hummingbird feeding on a bush very close and I was able to get some shots. I like the one with the bright red gorget. The Anna’s has to be facing at the right angle into the sun for the gorget to ‘light up’. Otherwise, it just looks black.
On Thursday and Friday of the previous week, the Phoenix area got a storm with cold weather and heavy rains. There was some unusual snow with the storm, with 6 inches accumulating in Scottsdale, which is rare. On our drive to RPWR we saw that there was still snow on the Superstition Mountains and Four Peaks. We decided to drive a short distance east and look for a vantage point to photograph the snow on the mountains. Not great shots, but they show the snow accumulation still there after three days of warmer weather.
