Poppies at Peridot Mesa, Feb 27, 2019

Dave and I went to Peridot Mesa, east of Globe, to photograph the wild California Poppies. This is expected to be a good year for wildflowers in the Arizona desert. We had some nice winter rains that came at a perfect time. The poppies were fantastic on Peridot Mesa, and they still weren’t at their peak. We plan on going back out in a week or two. On this trip, there was still snow on the mountains, which made a nice contrast with the blooming poppies.

Peridot Mesa is known as one of the premier spots to see fields of California Poppies in the desert. As we approached on the freeway we could see the bright yellow poppies covering the hills and stretching down the slopes. The ‘hills came alive’ with California Poppies!

Peridot Mesa is on the Apache Reservation, and requires a $10 permit. Dave was providing some Drone video for the tribe, so he needed a permit for that. The tribe provided a guide who accompanied us on the trip and waived all fees.

We stopped for lunch in Globe, and ate with Paul, who is going to use Dave’s videos. Paul told us of some other spots we might check out for wildflowers.

I don’t think my photos really capture the beauty of the expanse of poppies, but I tried. I need some landscape photography tips for wildflowers from Mark and Fr. Charlie!

I’m glad you like them! It’s good to know my picture is being put to good use on your desktop. The resolution of the photos on the website is reduced to the size that’s displayed. I’ll send you a full res version of that photo.
