Fr. Charlie, Mark, and I went to Southeast Arizona for a two day trip. We stayed in Sierra Vista, and from there went to Huachuca Canyon and the San Pedro River on the first day, and on the second day we went to Hunter Canyon, and Paton Center for Hummingbirds. This post is for the first day.
I always like going to Huachuca Canyon. There were a lot of Elegant Trogons there (I would estimate we saw or heard about 6). Unfortunately, we weren’t able to get very good shots of them. The Arizona Woodpecker was there again, and this time I got some closer shots.
After Huachuca Canyon we ate lunch in Fort Huachuca, and then went to the Hereford Bridge over the San Pedro River. As always, this is a beautiful spot. Next we went to San Pedro House Riparian National Conservation Area. We didn’t hike down to the river because a storm was blowing in and people said they didn’t see much. So we stayed around the visitor center. There was the Western Screech Owl, and hummers around the feeders.
In order to get to Huachuca Canyon you have to go to the Fort Huachuca visitor center (at the Van Deman Gate entrance on Hatfield Rd) and get a pass. This time the pass was good for a year. I may go back down later in the year when the Sulphur-bellied Flycatchers are back.
As always, these were awesome spots and well worth the trip.
