Father Charlie and I went to the Tres Rios Wetlands on November 19, 2018. We met at the west side of the wetlands (the Base and Meridian Wildlife Area, which is by the ISM Raceway) at about 7:45, and then drove one car to the east side (91st Avenue – a permit is required to park there). We then hiked the 3.5 miles from the east side to the west. I got home at about 1:30 (in time for my dentist appointment!).
There are a series of 9 ponds along the trail. I think the highlight of the day for me was the Lawrence’s Goldfinch, which is my first picture of one. We saw lots of Yellow-headed Blackbirds flocking and diving into the reeds. There were also many Neotropic Cormorants flying overhead in formation periodically throughout the day. We saw 2 or 3 species of hawk, which I had trouble identifying. Last time we were here, there were a lot of Osprey, but none today – I don’t know why. When we were shuttling back to my car after our hike, we saw a large flock of White-faced Ibis in a field that was being irrigated, which was a nice surprise.
It was a beautiful day at a great spot!
