Father Charlie and I went to the Granite Reef and Coon Bluff Recreation Areas on the Salt River on Thursday, May 17, 2018. We arrived at Granite Reef at about 8:00 AM. We spent a couple of hours there, and then went to Coon Bluff.
There were a lot of Vermilion Flycatchers. I would estimate 6 males at Granite Reef and 4 at Coon Bluff. They are always fun to photograph because they are so photogenic with the bright red, and the black mask. We hoped to see the Bullock’s Oriole, but no luck this time. There was some drama with the wild horses at Coon Bluff, with the dominant male chasing another horse through the trees. (I wasn’t able to get any shots of it.)
We left around noon, and had lunch at the ‘Sunnyside Breakfast Lounge’, which was very good.
Another fun morning at the Salt River!

So cool. What great color on those flycatchers.
I loved the Phainopepla also with his red eyes.
¡Gracias! I don’t get tired of those Vermilion Flycatchers. Both the Vermilion and Phainopepla have limited range in North America so we’re lucky to see them here.
