Father Charlie and I went to Picture Canyon Preserve and Walnut Canyon Lakes in Flagstaff on July 24, 2018. Phoenix hit a record high for July 24 (115 degrees), so it was nice to get up to cool Flagstaff. We rendezvoused at I-17 and Carefree Highway at 7:30 (there’s a McD’s there), since Fr Charlie now lives on the west side of town. We got to Walnut Canyon Lakes at about 9:30.
Walnut Canyon Lakes are a pair of man-made suburban lakes with houses along one side, and a concrete walkway around them. Not exactly wilderness! The Rufous Hummingbirds are common there, and I was hoping to get a photo of one. I did, but we weren’t able to get as close to it as we wanted.
Picture Canyon Preserve is a nice spot with a creek going through the narrow canyon, and a waterfall. It’s hard to get good photos of the waterfall without a lot of rock climbing. While we were in the canyon, a thunderstorm was coming with loud thunder and dark skies, so we decided to hike out. In the end, it passed us by. We spent several hours in the canyon.
It was a fun trip!
