Father Charlie, Mark, Mary Ann, and I went to Huachuca and Garden Canyons, and the San Pedro River, in southern Arizona. We originally planned a 4 day trip, but cut it short to 2 days. However, 2 days were enough for some fun hiking and photography in beautiful southern Arizona.
We left at about 8 on Tuesday morning and arrived at Fort Huachuca at about 11:00. We got our passes at the fort, and then headed to Huachuca Canyon, one of my favorite spots. We thought we had struck out on the Elegant Trogon, but Father Charlie saw one as we were driving out. We stopped and were able to get a shot.
We went to Garden Canyon the next morning, which is also part of Fort Huachuca, so it required the pass. It is an awesome spot. There are several side canyons, and we hiked a little ways up Scheelite Canyon.
Next we went to the San Pedro Riparian National Conservation Area (RNCA) in Hereford. We had gone previously to San Pedro house, but this is the first time to Hereford. It was a beautiful spot and very active with birds.
We stayed at the Sierra Suites. The rooms were nice, price was good ($71/night), complementary breakfast was good (including bacon, egg, and cheese breakfast sandwich the day we were there), and it is centrally located. We had no problem cancelling our reservations when we had to leave early.
