This post covers Day 7 of our Costa Rica photography trip.
I am finally getting around to the Day 7 post, with one more post left to go (for Day 8 and Day 9 combined). We spent Day 7 in the area around Selva Verde Lodge. This is near the town of Puerto Viejo de Sarapiquí and the Sarapiquí River, in the Sarapiquí Canton (I think a Canton is somewhat analogous to a County in the U.S.). We were out at 6:00 AM taking pictures in the area around Selva Verde Lodge. We ate breakfast at the Lodge (which was an excellent complimentary breakfast). They had bird feeders there, which you’ll see in some of the photos. A purist wouldn’t take the pictures at a feeder, but I tended to pick the best picture of the bird, regardless of the feeder (though not always). After breakfast we continued covering the area around the lodge, including going to the Sarapiquí River. From 1:00 to 2:00 we had a rare break!
Next, we drove to the Estación Biológica de la Selva. On the way we stopped in the town of Sarapiquí for lunch at the Bambú Restaurant. Fr. Charlie stepped out of character and enjoyed the Bambu Hamburguesa, which was a hamburger Dagwood style with many unusual items (which I don’t remember, but it included an egg). It was good (according to Fr Charlie), but 1/2 was enough. When we got to the Estación it was pouring rain, so I used my camera rain sleeve for the first time. From there it was back to the lodge for the night.

I have more pictures on this post than usual. I even pared it down some. Oh well – you can skip over the ones you don’t like 😊.

What if I like them all! Except I am sick and tired of all the tanagers–do they ever end?! Also, you need to learn the names of the flowers–just saying “flower” doesn’t quite cut it–maybe that’s a job for Mary Ann. These are amazing as usual. Have Jill show you how to make greeting cards out of your pics. We just finalized our reservations for our December trip to CR. I don’t expect to come back with these kinds of pics, though!
Thanks! I haven’t taken on the job of identifying flowers – I spend enough time trying to ID birds, butterflies, and dragonflies! I did make an attempt to ID some of the Costa Rica flowers and was getting conflicting info, and didn’t follow through with it. I’ve recently been out photographing Arizona wildflowers – I might ID those. I’ll be interested to hear about the plans for your trip.
