Mary Ann and I went to Granite Reef on Monday, April 26. The Black Vulture was new for me. They aren’t common here, but we saw 6 of them on a dead tree, and a ‘kettle’ of them soaring (about 15 or so). The Bullock’s Oriole is back. It’s difficult to get a good photo because they move so much and don’t come out in the open. I posted one that is just OK. There was a wild horse in the desert next to the parking lot. The wasp is called a Pepsis Grossa (formerly Pepsis Formosa). I found out (see here: https://arizonadailyindependent.com/2013/07/21/pepsis-wasps-have-the-most-painful-sting/) that a sting by these wasps is highest on the sting pain scale (I didn’t know there was such a thing!). It’s also called a Tarantula Hawk because it will kill a tarantula.
